What is Non-Owner SR22?

If you were convicted of a serious moving violation or reckless driving offense (such as a DUI or DWI) in a car, truck, motorcycle, boat, or even an ATV, most states will require you to obtain an SR-22 insurance bond. The same is true even if you don't own a vehicle. In this case, you will be required to carry what is called a "non-owner" SR-22 certificate.

Texas SR22 Cost

Convicted of a DUI or other reckless driving violation in Texas? If so, the chances are high that you will be required to purchase and maintain an SR-22 auto insurance policy rider. This certification is required by the state of Texas in order to mandate that the offending driver has "proof of financial responsibility and liability". This regulation is intended to protect other drivers from an uninsured motorist and to financially penalize the guilty driver.

Once you are charged with a reckless driving violation, you will be labeled as a "high-risk" driver by the auto insurance companies. The SR22 insurance policies in Texas are not cheap. Most SR-22 plans will cost 2 - 3 times the price of a basic auto insurance policy, and they need to be kept in force for 3 years or more.

What can you do to save money on your insurance costs if you need Texas SR22 insurance?

  • Get the highest-deductible insurance plan that you can find
  • Get insurance quotes from multiple insurance providers
  • Try to bundle your other insurance policies, like home-owner's and health insurance along with your car insurance policy
  • Complete a driver's safety course to prove to your insurance company that you are not a high-risk customer
  • If convicted of a DWI or DUI, attend an alcoholism recovery counseling program
